Virginia Travel Guide: Exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains by Road

Words by Julie Hunter
April 28, 2026

Almost heavenly, the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia rank among the United State’s most rewarding regions to explore by road. Here, scenic byways carve through misty ridgelines, rolling farmland and quietly characterful towns.

Our Virginia travel guide offers a glimpse into the beauty, culture and history of a state best discovered slowly, where the journey is as memorable as the destinations themselves.

Discover a landscape that unfolds in layers

Virginia is a landscape that unfolds gradually, with the Blue Ridge Parkway often at the heart of the journey. This 755km ribbon of road stitches together mountain overlooks, forested ridgelines and cinematic vistas, linking Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Wherever the road leads, detours reveal small towns where warm hospitality, local dining and a relaxed pace of life are never far away. Larger towns and cities including Lexington, Richmond and Charlottesville offer a dose of culture, history and contemporary energy.

As you settle into a journey through the parkway, the landscape softens into the pastoral calm of Draper Valley, where rolling farmland and quiet backroads feel a world away from the peaks above.

For a different perspective, the Primland Loop lifts you back into the mountains, offering sweeping panoramas and revealing a more expansive side of the Blue Ridge landscape.

This constant contrast – cultivated countryside giving way to untamed wilderness, then back again – is what makes Virginia so distinctive, and such a desirable destination for slower-paced escapes.

Towns and places that are worth a pause

Whether it’s the blooms of spring or the colours of fall, Virginia offers a compelling blend of untouched nature and quietly characterful towns, whatever the time of year. Here are our favourite places to enjoy on a journey through Virginia.

Pinnacles of Dan

Few places in the state offer views as expansive as the Pinnacles of Dan. Set just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, these distinctive conical peaks rise above the winding Dan River. The hike to the summit is challenging – not one for beginners – but those who make the climb are rewarded with uninterrupted vistas across the surrounding landscape.

Floyd, VA

Sitting at the top of the Blue Ridge Plateau, Floyd is an arts-driven mountain town known for its natural beauty, local wines and vibrant live music scene. While the town offers festivals year round, casual live music can be found throughout the week. This peaks at the weekly Friday Night Jamboree, when the streets of the town overflow with musicians – some playing in alleys, driveways and parking lots during the warmer months.

Meadows of Dan, VA

Another key stop along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Meadows of Dan offers a gentler pace of discovery. This small mountain community is known for its photogenic beauty and rural charm – a peaceful setting to pause, dine and even spend the night. Visit the peach and apple orchards, artisan shops and the historic Mabry Mill, showing off a working gristmill and blacksmith shop that bring the region’s heritage to life.

Lexington, VA

No Blue Ridge Mountains travel guide would be complete without mentioning Lexington. In the heart of the range, Lexington is an elegant college town with beauty at every turn. The historic downtown offers well-curated shops, art galleries and gourmet restaurants, while outdoor adventures are just a short drive away – as is the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail, boasting 20 craft breweries.

Hanging Rock State Park

Just south of the state line in North Carolina, Hanging Rock State Park delivers a dramatic change in scenery. Sheer quartzite faces rise above dense forest, while a network of trails leads to cascading waterfalls and exposed summits. The hike to Hanging Rock itself is relatively accessible through quiet woodland, but still rewards walkers with sweeping views across the Sauratown Mountains.

What kind of travellers will most appreciate Virginia as a destination?

Virginia offers an abundance of space, scenery and a strong sense of regional character. It’s a destination for travellers who value depth over pace, finding as much enjoyment in the journey as in the arrival.

The appeal lies in long drives along the stunning Blue Ridge Parkway, time spent lingering in small mountain communities, and moments of stillness in a particularly picturesque corner of the US. While Virginia has its share of cities, attractions and landmarks, they are not the main draw.

Those seeking a fast-moving itinerary packed with major sights and high-energy urban environments may be better suited to East Coast hubs such as New York City, Washington DC, or Boston.
